Tharpu Chuli (Tent Peak) is located in the sanctuary of Annapurna. This sanctuary is an amphitheater, consisting of a range of impressive Himalayan peaks forming a vast basin, accessible only from the south by the valley of the Modi Khola River. The vast southern face of the South Annapurna (7291m) is located at the head of the South Annapurna glacier, and guards the western flank of the sanctuary.

In the middle all this is the Tharpu at 5663m. The surrounding peaks are exposed in all their fame. The southern face of the base of Annapurna has entered the legend for climbing teams. The trek to the advanced camp involves crossing the South Annapurna glacier.

This is not an easy crossing. It involves a steep descent into the glacier through a terrain very hilly by the confused mass of unstable rocks of all sizes on the base of the glacier. Then you have to go up to the other side of the glacier. Allow about 7 hours to reach the advanced camp. However, you will be rewarded with stunning views during this itinerary.

The advanced camp is located about 4500m, at the edge of the snow. The upper camp is at an altitude of 5000m. It is very close to the foot of the snowy steep face that leads to the summit ridge of Tharpu Chuli. It takes about 4 hours to get from the advanced camp to the upper camp. The descent to the base camp will take place in more than 7 hours with very slippery conditions. The normal route follows the northwest ridge to the summit, although the mountain has been climbed by the southeast ridge as well as by the southwest face. The peak was nicknamed Tent Pic by Jimmy Roberts in 1956.
